MONTALCINO
The farmhouse
is situated on the southern side of Montalcino, between
S. Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate, just a few
kilometres from the beautiful abbey of S. Antimo. The
vineyards are planted on the downward slopes that gradually
descend in altitude from 400 metres to 200 metres above
sed level. At the bottom of the valley the Orcia River
delineates the furthest boundary of the estate. The
position of the vineyards guarantees protection from
cold winds from the north. To the east the majestic
Monte Amiata dominates the view, and view southwards
reveals the Maremma in all its splendour. Thanks to
this enchanting position, harvest at SESTA is slightly
earlier than in other areas.

The land
The soil is formed from
the erosion of marl and limestone. It is characterised
by the presence of some clay, chalk, other mixed fragments
and significant areas of lean “tufo”.
Sesta’s decision to cultivate Sangiovese
Grosso (known locally “Brunello”)
stems from a respect for the traditional vocation of
this area.
The production
The growth system is cordone speronato:
essentially a resulting from a short pruning, with two
shoots and a variable number of spurs per vine-stock.
The pruning and harvest are all done by hand. The fermentation
takes place in stainless tanks at a controlled temperature.
The ageing takes place in Slavonian oak barrels with
capacity varying from 20 to 50 hectolitres. The bottling
takes place in an oxygen free zone in order to avoid
the oxidation of the final product.
Annual average production (750 ml bottles)
